Underwater Adventures in Komodo: Diving in Siaba, Mawan, and Tatawa
The Komodo National Park in East Nusa Tenggara is not only famous for its ancient Komodo dragons but also recognized as one of the best diving destinations in the world. With rich marine biodiversity, vibrant coral reefs, and thrilling currents, it’s a paradise for divers of all levels. Among its many dive sites, Siaba, Mawan, and Tatawa stand out for their unique characteristics and marine life. Here’s a complete overview of each:
Siaba (Siaba Besar & Siaba Kecil)
Dive Type: Reef dive, drift dive
Difficulty Level: Beginner – Intermediate
Depth Range: 5 – 25 meters
Current Conditions: Generally mild, perfect for beginners
Siaba Besar, often called the “Turtle City,” is a calm and shallow dive site ideal for beginners and snorkelers. Its sandy bottom and seagrass beds are home to numerous green and hawksbill turtles, swimming peacefully around divers.
Highlights:
Frequent encounters with turtles
Rich coral garden and macro life
Colorful reef fish, lionfish, nudibranchs
Occasional sightings of dugongs (rare)
Siaba Kecil, on the other hand, has stronger currents and is better suited for more experienced divers. It offers an exciting drift dive with excellent visibility and a chance to see large schools of fish and pelagics.
Mawan
Dive Type: Muck dive, drift dive
Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Depth Range: 10 – 30 meters
Current Conditions: Moderate to strong
Mawan is one of the best spots in Komodo to encounter manta rays. The wide sandy bottom and coral-covered cleaning stations attract these graceful giants year-round, especially during transitional months.

Beautiful soft corals and anemone fields
Napoleon wrasse, sweetlips, moray eels
Ideal for underwater photography
The best time to dive here is during moderate currents between March–May and September–November, when mantas are most active.
Tatawa (Tatawa Besar & Tatawa Kecil)
Dive Type: Drift dive
Difficulty Level: Intermediate – Advanced
Depth Range: 5 – 30 meters
Current Conditions: Strong (especially in Tatawa Kecil)
Tatawa Besar is a favorite for fun drift dives, with divers gliding along the colorful coral slopes carried by the current. The reef is rich in life, from soft corals and gorgonians to large sponges.

Napoleon wrasse, fusiliers, barracudas
Occasional reef sharks and trevallies
Great for snorkeling as well
Tatawa Kecil is more challenging, offering strong currents and a rugged underwater terrain. It’s a thrilling ride for experienced divers, with opportunities to see reef sharks, schooling jacks, and even manta rays when in season.
